Older versions of Trainz - worth buying
So, we've probably all had that email yesterday about older versions of Trainz and the discount/credit thingy.
My question is, is it worth buying any of the older versions of Trainz- if so, which?
Did any have any content that wasn't available in Trainz 12 or TANE that could be imported in? That seems like the only reason for wanting / needing to get hold of older versions?
I have Trainz 2006 registered (but I lost my CD to install it. Doh! - but I still have the license key) and I also have Trainz 12 - but I've never thought about importing older content into newer versions.
Anything in Trainz 2006 (or even Trainz 12) worth importing to TANE? I must admit, I've hardly fired up TANE or Trainz 12 within the last 12 months - mainly because my graphics card died and I've not replaced it, and I've had barely any free time this year due to other commitments.
Might be time to fire up Tane or Trainz 12 again if there's any older content worth importing.
Muchas gracius amigos.

Re: Older versions of Trainz - worth buying
I think it's more for the 'collector' type (you know the one, has to have everything on the dls whether they will use it or not).
Most of the early content has (or will be) updated for Tane if it's possible, some assets just won't port over for various reasons, much easier to make a new one.
I took the free offer of 'Original Trainz V1', as I was bought this by the wife, but had bought UTC myself at the same time, so I never bothered installing & registering the V1, I donated it to a sales stall for a local fund raiser, now I can have it on my 'Timeline' (when N3v sort out the problem of it being a 'No Show')

Re: Older versions of Trainz - worth buying
My view would be to buy what you fancy, BUT:
1) Get 1.1 which is totally free, just to see what it was like !
2) Most old hands swear by 2004 as the best ever version.
3) Ignore 2006/9/ and maybe 10.
4) Get TS12 if your PC is not up to standard for TANE and start saving for a new PC
5) Otherwise get TANE and / or TMR17 (but then I'm biased having a route in TMR17 )
Regards

The only versions I think might be useful to get for the content are the TC-series versions. However you can get their content as stand-alone DLC.

Unless you have compulsory collectivitus it's not worth the bother. You can get pills for it anyway !Briggsy wrote:Thanks guys, so basically, not worth bothering then as I already have TS12 and Tane.
TC 3 has some great extra locos & stock though.

But I believe you can get them all by buying the S&C DLC.Itareus wrote:Unless you have compulsory collectivitus it's not worth the bother. You can get pills for it anyway !Briggsy wrote:Thanks guys, so basically, not worth bothering then as I already have TS12 and Tane.

I think what PerRock is referring to is the fact that you can get the S&C as an add-on for later versions of Trainz (it's now TANE compatible), rather than purchasing it as a standalone edition.

OK thanks, I bought it when it first came out - great selection of extra assets and many many more on the S&C website !Class172 wrote:I think what PerRock is referring to is the fact that you can get the S&C as an add-on for later versions of Trainz (it's now TANE compatible), rather than purchasing it as a standalone edition.

Why not, it's free.Itareus wrote:My view would be to buy what you fancy, BUT:

On stability and change grounds, absolutely, as an old hand, I would say this is true. Because a) It was fantastically stable and b) It introduced a lot of the Session-Editing stuff, which previously didn't exist. With UTC and Trainz 1.1 - 1.3, you essentially had a "Free Drive" and "Scenarios", which for those who haven't had such an old version of Trainz, was basically impossible to create. You essentially had to code all the rules for trains to drive etc.Itareus wrote: 2) Most old hands swear by 2004 as the best ever version.
06 is just 04 with more bugs.Itareus wrote: 3) Ignore 2006/9/ and maybe 10.
09 is just 10 Beta.
10 is worth getting, again, stability was solid and introduced a lot of new features to the game as well as a huge leap in graphics.
12 is pretty decent, but not stable enough.Itareus wrote: 4) Get TS12 if your PC is not up to standard for TANE and start saving for a new PC
I mean, those are the latest versions..........Itareus wrote: 5) Otherwise get TANE and / or TMR17 (but then I'm biased having a route in TMR17 )

Re: Older versions of Trainz - worth buying
TS12 (SP4) is fine and stable as long as you don't add any N3V payware DLC to it , then you get regular asset verification checks , which get longer and longer as you add more content . I used to get these 2 or 3 times a month lasting 4+ hours each time , but since I've removed the payware I've only had to suffer it twice in the last 6 months !

Re: Older versions of Trainz - worth buying
Hello members,
Well over the years had many versions Trainz installed on my computer.
The best copy ever purchased was the Trainz 2006 Collection pack that had extra layouts.
Some of these layouts are now on the DLS modified for TS12 usage.
Other members have also upgraded the classic layouts to work in later versions as freeware.
