Class 304 EMU Details

Post by evertrainz »

Hi all,

If anyone has good shots of the detail on the Class 304 EMU units I would greatly appreciate them. I am aware that the only surviving trailer unit, that was on the brink of preservation/restoration, was vandalized beyond repair and thus scrapped.

So shots of the detail on any of the first-gen AC EMUs (302-310) would be very appreciated, if there even are any preserved at a local railway! I am particularly after underframe detail and gangway connection equipment.

Regards
Ron

80's Rail photo site , 10 Pages of class 304 images : https://80srail.zenfolio.com/p1000871027

There's a few details in an older issue of the "Modern Locomotives Illustrated" magazine issue 228 "London Midland and North west area EMU's"

Available as a digital download from pocketmags : https://pocketmags.com/modern-locomotiv ... /issue-228

issue 183 of the same magazine covered "First Generation Eastern Region[GE] emu's"

Hugh Longworth's book "British Railways Electric Multiple Units to 1975" is expensive but well worth it (cheaper on Amazon ;) ) :

Loved these around the Midlands.

Most comfortable seats ever, and the heaters were so toasty, you could bake a loaf of bread on your journey from Coventry to New Street.

Dave those photos should come in very handy, thanks for all the links.

Briggsy I have heard that out of all EMU refurbishments the 304s kept their antique and dated interiors , and NEEDED the bouncy seats to compensate for the older track found in the region!

If you think it was hot for the passengers you should've set foot in the cab after some smart-a*se had left the all the heaters full on all night  I literally melted the sole of one of my boots after changing ends at Coventry one morning (I was having a little doze in the platform 4 area) when I rested my foot on the heater. Those boots were supposed to be oil and heat resistant - but they couldn't cope with 304 heat :D

Cheers
