Is blender the right software for creating locomotives ?

Post by Jacks trainz »

Hello all,

I use to have a copy of gmax on my old pc. Since loosing that pc I have lost access to using gmax for assest creation.

I'm now Wondering if blender is the right price of software for continuing to create locomotives and train vehicles.

being an engineering student I know my way around CAD software quite well. I would use an external programme to create a 3D model before exporting and opening in gmax for final tweaking and exporting .

Does bender have the capabilities for creating locomotives such as the ability to make attachment points?

Many thanks

Jack

Blender is now the most used program, I don't use it having 3ds Max however lots do, edh6 for example if you are wondering about quality and locos.

I'm currently doing my research. Having used gmax in the past im now needing to learn a new piece of software. I want to know the capabilities and how to achive the best results.

I've already started my first 3D mesh for the unit I would like to create. I'm hoping to use gmax for creating the bogie attachment points as well as the cab and other interior attachment points.

Before I finish off my loco in gmax I will do a few tutorials if I can find some for making simple objects just so I can get use to a new interface.

Jack, one of the best guiding lights you could contact regarding Blender is (Chris) Itarius. He put together some excellent written tutorials which will give you a good idea of how everything works. If you ask him, I'm sure he'll send you a copy. Chris is a great advocate of Blender and a fount of knowledge.

Having said that, I haven't seen him about here for a while - though I'm sure he still visits quietly - but you can certainly find him on the main N3V forums. It would be well worth the effort, I assure you.

Cheers

Thanks Dave,

I will have a go at contacting him. Hopefully I might here something from him. In the mean time I will look about the web to see if any tutorials have been posted anywhere.

Hopefully in a few months I might have a few new tricks up my sleeve
