Although some Northern pacers are being replaced by the 150/1s down here in GWR land. While Bristol gets Turbos and Thames Valley services now have shiny new electric 387s.

I really feel sorry for the Northern area. They've had the short end of the rolling stock stick pretty much since privatisation; if anyone deserves new stock, it's them. Am I right in thinking this is the first time since privatisation Northern'll have actually new trains that aren't hand-me-downs from someone else?

You forgot the class 333. :D
Well, I used to live near Liverpool and Northern was a desaster, although I was kind of fond of the old trains. (the sound, the smell...) Thanks, Arriva/DB! Although Deutsche Bahn shouldn´t forget to keep those trains on time and running back here in Germany... Beleive it or not, delays are an actual problem here too!

Ahhh the good old Pacers.

We often joke about non-tilting trains being able to tilt when content creators make their goodies on here - but the pacers actually were trains that tilted despite not being designed to tilt.

Especially during h̶i̶g̶h̶ ̶w̶i̶n̶d̶s̶ weather.

TILT LOL, they rocked, swung, swayed, bobbed up and down and did virtually every movement a railway vehicle isn’t supposed too lol. Ride north out of Sheffield in a 141 was an interesting experience ha.

Pacers tilt on the seawall at dawlish thanks to the superelevation of the track near Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth.

They seem to be invincible though.

Not sure how true it is, but I've heard that if a nuclear bomb was dropped on Yorkshire, only a Pacer would survive unscathed.....

You're getting some proper trains down in the South West:

From what I gather, the government twisted Northern's arm up their back before they agreed the current franchise with them. The condition was that all Pacers have to be replaced with new stock by 2020.

Riding on those things from Preston to Blackpool you could have the base of your spine pounded to a powder one minute (as the old Pacer bottomed out on the springs) before crushing your skull against the roof on the way to the next rail joint. Then it was rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. God help you if you ever needed the loo on one of those things. You'd have wet yourself before you got anywhere near a toilet.

Cheers

Dave

I'm amazed those things are allowed to even run on the railways still. I shudder to think how they'd stand up to a head-on collision.

It's baffling how old Mk1 coaches are not allowed to be used on the railways now without a sturdier barrier coach or loco - yet these tins on wheels seem to be invincible.

Why do I get the feeling these still won't be scrapped! I have visions of them running the Bedford to Bletchley route freeing up a couple of 150's.

2020 sounds a bit optimistic, there'll probably still be lurching into 2025.

Highly likely as believe it or not, their relatively wide doors and flat floors mean they are compliant with the 2020 disability access ruling. Might see them coupled up to 10 cars on the MML to replace non complaint HST’s after the government delayed or cancelled electrification LOL :D
