Turf FX in TRS2019
I'm currently in a position to look at purchasing a new GPU and I'm trying to find out if the Turf Effects in TRS2019 will work with a recent AMD card (RX Vega 64 etc.) ?
High visibility pixels must be worn when on or about the line !!

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Should work if the GPU is DX11/12 however you might be better with a Nvidia GPU as TurfFX is an Nvidia effect. I wouldn't go lower than an RX Vega 64 which is about equivalent to a GTX1080 if you believe the reviews plus a 1080 is cheaper, could get a 1080TI for just a bit more than an RX Vega 64 at the moment GTX 1080 £350,GTX 1080TI about £490, RX Vega 64 around £435 depending on where you look. Personally I'd go for the 1080TI which is still rated higher over the 2070 and 2080. Mind you I'm biased having a 1080TI.Nexusdj wrote:I'm currently in a position to look at purchasing a new GPU and I'm trying to find out if the Turf Effects in TRS2019 will work with a recent AMD card (RX Vega 64 etc.) ?
Nvidia are unbeatable as far as GPU's go at present, I wouldn't bother with the 20XX stuff just yet, there isn't much that can use the Raytracing yet and not likely to be for some time most tech sites are saying it's more of a sideways move than an upgrade.
Nothing new from AMD expected until next year.

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Thanks for the info
Can you point me towards a site selling a 1080ti for about £490 as the cheapest I'm seeing are up in the £650-1000 price range :
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-compo ... tx-1080-ti
&
https://www.google.co.uk/search?tbm=sho ... 80&bih=908
&
https://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components ... TX-1080-Ti
The Vega 64 is as you say currently around the £400 to £600 mark :

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Hmm got the 1080TI price from one of the review sites, obviously out of touch or possibly prices are going up again.
1080TIs? Ebuyer had loads a week or two ago, not just three of them they seem to have now, quick look at Scan who also had several, they have none! PC world just one, they had quite a few recently as well, Dabs now taken over by BT have none, Novatek None and Prices appear to have gone up again, probably means there is a shortage again, I don't trust what's advertised on Amazon.
I was using a GTX980 now moved to a Ryzen PC and that worked very well on High and some Ultimate settings with my i7, the 1080's are allegedly 64% faster, that 980 actually works well with the Ryzen 5 1600 as well.
Comparison of the RX Vega 64 versus the GTX1080 here not much if anything between them. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/A ... 3933vs3603

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
I paid about £700 for my 1080Ti Malc and that was ages ago. Mind you, mine's a ROG STRIX make so I probably paid a bit more than for the standard stuff at the time. That particular make are around a £1,000 now so I'm glad I jumped in when I did. The cheapest I've seen 1080Ti's going for recently though is around the £650 to £700 mark - even on e-bay (but very few of them at that price.) Seems there's nothing on the horizon to challenge Nvidia so they feel like they can charge what they like - especially with Christmas around the corner. It might be a good idea to hold off and see what January brings, Dave. You might uncover a bargain in a Sale some where.
I have to say though, the 1080Ti is a superb card. It pauses for nothing, no matter what it is. It's a heavy price but worth the outlay 'cause it takes no prisoners - ever.
Cheers
Dave

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
@Malc : Thanks for the comparison link
I was reading an article earlier that contained supposed leaked info on new AMD GPU's for next year , An 8GB RX 3080 card that could equal the Nvidia 2070 and be up to 15% faster than the Vega 64 and with a price of only $249 / £195 !! Whether that's true or not I'm now tempted to wait as that's nearly half of what a Vega 64 will currently cost me and it'll have more bang for my buck .
https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/amd-r ... -the-price
The only downside is that I might have to wait until the middle of the year to get one and the British Rail EXIT at the end of March will probably cause the price to sky rocket along with everything else !!
@Dave : Yes it looks very much like Nvidia prices have gone up again for Christmas which is typical as I'm looking to buy .

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Mines a Gigabyte Aorus, again cheaper than they are now though! Got if from my local PC shop, he undercut the cheapest I could find it at online, 3 minute walk away. I've just seen a GTX1080 Founders edition on Amazon for over £2000! That's more than a RTX2080TI, in fact all the Amazon prices are grossly over priced to what they were a couple of months ago. Looks like Ebuyer is about the cheapest option for GPUs at the moment.
Anyway, got to say this 1080Ti rocks, hardly gets warm and is exceedingly quiet even with it's three fans, bit of an odd design as it's two fans with a third in behind, it works though! My 980Ti was good as well however tended to get rather warm, it's now doing good service in my very cheap self build Ryzen 5 1600 thanks to Maplins 50%+ off closing down sale, couldn't resist a over half price off list value Asus B350 Prime motherboard + cpu bargain and I wanted to try out a Ryzen set up, I already got enough Drives, 750 Watt Corsair PSU from a Dead i7 3770K setup and the ram again very cheap from Maplins, actually it runs TRS19 quite well with the GTX980! Did treat it to a new Coolermaster Case though, the 980TI was too big for the old battered one I had with out removing the drive bays which I needed.
British Rail Exit? lol I have doubts if it will ever happen, I think we need a no confidence in Parliament vote!
Edit: Just had a thought, wasn't Intel supposed to be entering the GPU market? Not that I'd expect any GPU they make to actually be much use.....

I think they should arrest the lot of them and lock 'em all up. There isn't a decent or honest one amongst them.clam1952 wrote:British Rail Exit? lol I have doubts if it will ever happen, I think we need a no confidence in Parliament vote!
If the price of their i9 CPU is anything to go by then I dread to think what they'd charge for a GPU.clam1952 wrote:Edit: Just had a thought, wasn't Intel supposed to be entering the GPU market? Not that I'd expect any GPU they make to actually be much use.....

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Just be aware with AMD GPU's, if you also run MSTS the fix that used to work with these no longer does so - won't run under Win 7 or Win 10 on anything other than a Nvidia chipset...

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Any further news on AMD 8GB RX 3080 cards?
Sounds like the sort of bargain that's right up my street.

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
I've not seen any further information at the moment .
I'm sure I've read somewhere that there's a major show coming up soon where a lot of the new tech will be announced by the big players .
As for me I went for a Gigabyte Radeon RX Vega 64 which was just over £400 from Overclockers (with delivery) , My wallet won over my gut and the £350 saved from not purchasing an equivalent power Nvidia card was mostly spent on a new PSU so that I could resurrect my newer windows 10 PC , so a double win
The only downside has been the roulette of AMD GPU drivers that I've had to plough through to find one that keeps my PC stable and which also gets on with TANE (with shadows on) . A week and half of testing and reading through lot's of forum posts has led me to AMD's 18.3.3 drivers that where released last year . So far in TANE (touch wood) I've had no CTD's , Black screens , Tearing and artefacts on the screen or the dreaded BSOD that I've had with other driver versions and I've been able to up the draw distance to 10,000 metres with barely a stutter , Which is way more than the 3500-4000 that my older R9 290x would work comfortably with .
As for the most recent AMD drivers they work great in TANE but they kept causing my PC to completely freeze about every 3 hours ! The only way to recover from that was by using the power button on the case and a hard reset !
In all cases the "DDU" program has been my friend in making sure all the remnants of older GPU drivers are fully removed from my system .
Fingers crossed I'm not back on here in the next day or 2 complaining that the drivers have failed .

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
I ditched AMD cards when I got TANE. Couldn't play on TANE for long before the I would get a black screen and an error says the drivers had crashed but recovered, although the screen would still stay black. That is with various AMD cards and various settings. In the end I gave up and spent £600 on a GeForce GTX 1080 just under a year ago, and no problems since!

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
I spoke too soon ...
Those drivers failed as well , had a few hours with no problems then my computer froze and again a couple of hours later !
Disillusioned and ready to throw the towel in completely by asking for a refund I decided to DDU the drivers as windows 10 was waiting to install the 1809 update .
I knew that the update would no doubt include an install of the Microsoft AMD drivers (build 17.7) and had resisted going down that route especially after reading a few online horror stories but .....
They work
I've had no crashing or freezing so far after 12 hours of near solid use ,
TANE works with no screen tearing and artefacts , shadows are on (high) and draw distance cranked up to 10,000m .
I'm not counting my chickens just yet and there's going to be no fingers crossed or touch wood this time to tempt the inevitable
Will report back in a few days whatever happens , Hoping those who are suffering the same problems can use this as a possible fix .
Note though that this may not work on different computer setups , plus given they have a build number of 17 means the drivers are at least 12 to 18 months old and may not work correctly with recent games .

Re: Turf FX in TRS2019
Ah, the joys of AMD drivers. My current card is the Radeon Sapphire HD-7970 Vapor-X 3GB and I get a lot of black screens and hangs on boot on my main boot (I've have a dual boot set-up) and it's no doubt driver issues.
I've no problem going for a NVidia card - I've flitted between both down the years.
