Computer Upgrade/New Build
Hi Guys I was thinking about upgrading or building a new computer from scratch, I was wondering whether any of you guys have any recommendations for being able to run T:ANE at Highish detail. I was thinking along the lines of an AMD FX 8000 Series CPU and a Nvidia Geforce 900/700 Series card. Any ideas would be great by the way this is going to be a long term thing as i'm gonna have to save up a bit,but i'd like to get the basis so I know how much I need to save up for.
Thanks for any advice.
James.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
First off, What is your budget?
Secondly, What is your current setup?
Thirdly, I personally wouldn't go for an AMD CPU, unless you're on a cheap budget. But for real power for your money, I'd go with at least an Intel Core i5 mixed with an Nvidia Geforce GTX 760 or above. (I'm currently running an Intel i5 4570, GTX 660 SC 2GB along with 16 GB of RAM - and I can run Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings.) (and I don't want to start a AMD vs Intel war! - For anyone that is thinking it.)

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
T:ANE certainly likes to make computers work hard, James but I use the Nvidia GTX780Ti (with an Intel i7-4790K CPU) and I can pretty much max most things out - including T:ANE. These things don't come cheap but are worth every penny and should see you happily into the future for a fair while yet if you can afford them.

Hmm when i've saved up enough probably up to £500 and a GTX 760 is within my maximum. I was thinking prettySnakeLight64 wrote:First off, What is your budget?

high end AMD FX CPU to save some money. Intel Is very expensive.
At the moment I have a AMD A10 6700 Quad Core Processor,Nvidia GeForce GT620,1 TB Hard drive. No idea what spec my Motherboard is. But i'd hazard a guess at my PSU being around 300 W.
Thanks for the continued help guys,Also sorry for the long post mods.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
Well instead of building a new machine why don't you upgrade your PSU, GPU and slap an SSD into your machine - That'll give you a huge performance boost.
SSDs are going for cheap now you could pick up an Samsung Evo SSD 240GB for about 80 quid off of Amazon. This alone will speed your system up, at work we stuck in a SSD into all our old Dell OptiPlex 755 and it was running like a brand new machine.
Upgrading our PSU will allow you to buy a better GPU
and to finish it off you could go for a GTX 750 or 750 TI which are around the 100 odd mark but you'll probably find there is another GPU just as good or better for cheaper price. You just got to do your research.
Regards,
Reece

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
okay maybe I'll try that but I do want to upgrade the CPU and I would only have to pay up to £170 for a good AMD processor.
Or I could try a high end Intel i5,My question is would a AMD FX 8000 Series processor be better than a high end Intel I5 Processsor?
Of course as you said i'll look into some SSD's,Just out of interest how does it actually speed it up?
Cheers James.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
Pushing it to get an AMD anywhere near a high end i5
Best have a look here http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/cpu
Having said that though after the latest hotfix my number two rig, AMD Phenom II x6 1090T + GTX680 is performing very well with TANE.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
Thanks for that Malc. And also guys I was thinking about compatibility with the motherboard? Any recs for some good but cheap ones.
Also what am I looking at for PSU wise with this upgrade?
Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
It really depends on what GPU you go for but I'd say, to give you some headway, is to go for a PSU above 500Watts.
As for the CPU, It'll be best to know what motherboard you've got, that way we can suggest the right CPU to get.
Also is this computer a custom built PC or is it a manufactured PC?
Cheers,
Reece.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
I was thinking about something like 650w for the PSU.
Also yeah my computer is manufactured it's an Acer Aspire TC-105 i'll try and find the model of the Motherboard. Although I may have to edit or double posy so apologies if that happens.
Thanks for the help James.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
I've had PC's from the Acer range before now and some of the PSU's are quite odd shapes and sizes specific to the particular model you buy. It can be tricky if you want to upgrade later.
I'd go for 750 Watts myself - in fact that's exactly what I bought. A lot of the Nvidia Cards these days are much more energy efficient than they used to be so there's no real need to go above 750w. I run about 4 cooling fans in addition to all the normal stuff and I've never had a problem.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
Okay thanks for that Dave in that case I may consider a new case then. Also I've been looking and I don't think the motherboard in my computer model isn't great either. So I may have to look into that, however on the plus thanks for the recommendation of the GTX 750Ti Reece been looking at some Videos of gameplay on it I must admit this will help save a lot of money. I also found the link to Scan you posted very useful this should be great for parts in general .
However have you considered offers on sites like amazon because I found an AMD FX9590 CPU on offer for like £120.00 down from the £700 mark, considering this I do see what you meant, you certainly have to do your research
Many Thanks Again James.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
I've just done a new build. i5-4460, 3,2Ghz, Gigabyte Z97p-D3 mobo, Gigabyte Nvidia GTX-960 2GB, 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD. I haven't bothered with an SSD as I have a separate drive for the OS. All ordered from Scan on Thursday and delivered and built yesterday. Just over 500 quid in all. Not an earth shattering rig but it should run TANE quite well. I'll give that a go later today.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
Sounds like a pretty decent rig better than what I have at the moment. Let us know how it runs Sounds very efficient unfortunately I have no idea how to build a computer but after all I am doing A Level Computing so I should learn it there.

Re: Computer Upgrade/New Build
In my opinion, I'd avoid the FX9000 chips like the plague. They're simply not worth the hassle. Add the fact that their 220W TDP means you'll need expensive cooling and a quality (read, expensive) motherboard to provide the thing with enough power without damaging the VRMs... I'd heartily recommend an intel build but if you're set on AMD the only chips I'd consider would be the 6300 or 8300 series...
