N3V Forum Offline - Three Days And Counting

Post by VernM »

As the title suggests, the N3V forum has been offline for "maintenance" since Wednesday.

Any idea what might be going on? The DLS and activation servers still seem to be working so hopefully nothing sinister, but it does seem a rather extended outage.

I thought I'd just missed a notice about scheduled downtime on the N3V forum. Seems not then.

According to the moderators on the trainz discord, the last time they did maintenance, it was down for a week or two.

Is "Trainz forum deprivation syndrome" setting in? Are the withdrawal symptoms getting too much? Perhaps N3V are behind with their server subscriptions!

Hi, I'm that mod! ;)

Last time I know it took longer because it also crashed & wasn't taken down... but even still, 1-2wks is quite a while for a website to be fixed.

Here is an update from N3V:
Just a quick update, the forums are still offline for maintenance and will be for a few more days (in particular as it is currently the weekend), however we do hope to bring them back during the week.
Despite being a mod, I only know as much as you guys (they don't tell us anything).

I seem to recall a big 'maintenance' a good few years back and it led to issues and rants.

Can't say it bothers me much. Merely curiosity on my part.

Nor me! Just keep taking the tablets - just in case!

It will be interesting to see what results from this "big forum maintenence"!

Wasn't there something known as the "big forum crash" around 2007 or 2008 which pretty much wiped out the whole historical database? (I think it conveniently happened around the time Dark Reign went pop).

You got to wonder what this is being hosted on if it takes so long, a 286!!

Well the DLS still seems to be alive so I guess the time to worry is if that goes dark.

However it certainly doesn't cast a favourable commercial impression to customers looking to use the dev's forum to discuss the product.

Hopefully more spam controls, so that I don't have to spend most of my moderating time banning spam bots.

They mentioned at some point in the past, that it's not a straight forward connection between MyTrainz & the forums. If I had to guess, they're having to write custom code to marry the two systems together again.

It all very reminiscent of the Great Forum Crash of 2006 (when everything was lost!) But perhaps not as severe as the Great DLS Outage (2010?) that halted uploads/downloads for weeks (or was it days?) Interesting to see that N3V's shaky relationship with the internet continues!

Yes, some disaster may have occured. I don't recall any notice being given by N3V of a period of planned maintenance, I don't know, perhaps they did give notice and I just missed it!

Speaking of the DLS, Zec had this to say on the 13th of August:
In regards to DLS uploads, please also note that due to a very very large upload to the DLS (particularly a cdp with over 1300 assets), the DLS is still working through recent uploads. At this stage it should still be processing them, however it is taking longer to process the backlog. Our team are keeping an eye on it, and if it does get stuck then we will look into it further during the week.
I haven't downloaded anything from the DLS, but someone has reported that download speeds from the DLS are unusually slow even with an FCT.
The re in re57k stands for reverie. No idea why I had to shorten it but now you know.
NOTICE: Speed is limited to 25 mph due to overlapping track geometry
Spends too much time staring at polygons. I model using Blender. If you have any questions, feel free to ask/reply!
